Northstar Specialty 2022
Sunday 6/19/2022
Conformation Judge: Mr Roger Tebbutt
It was a thrill to travel with Debbie to Minnesota to judge your hounds.
Naturally, I assumed I’d been invited to judge the second day in order to correct all the mistakes she would have made on the previous day. But no! it was uncanny to discover how much we agreed, even down to the minor placings,
in our assessment of the hounds. And what hounds they were!
I first had the privilege of judging a collection of your hounds a quarter of a century ago.
Albeit that it was a ‘fun’ match event, I remember clearly how impressed I was by the depth of quality,
strength of type and uniformity of the breed before me that day.
Safe to say, it was an eye-opener in terms of what one might hope to find in an entry.
In the UK, we lacked the depth and uniformity of quality I found that day all those years ago.
It is with some sadness that I report that not much has changed in our country: in some ways we have regressed,
in that fewer can maintain big kennels and commit or understand the process of judicious breeding for the long term.
This appointment was in many ways a repeat of my previous experience; suffice to say it was a delight to find classes with quality,
well-made wolfhounds all down the line; hounds that spoke to me of the breed standard, and, in so many cases,
a disappointment to have to award them lower places, or to leave them out of the ribbons altogether.
I would have been proud to have some of our own hounds placed somewhere in those classes.
I am indebted to my two peerless stewards, Andrea Dormady and Jamie Germain,
who kept me on the straight and narrow with ready help and advice on procedure.
It was a hot day, and I admired their tenacity, having gone through it all the day before!
By the way, heartfelt thanks for how well we were hosted for the whole trip by our old friend Marilyn McClaskey,
who catered to every whim of these tired travelers.
I was truly thrilled by my Best of Breed line-up. Quality all around. My Best of Opposite, Hamilton,
I had judged before as a youngster in California. I was impressed enough by him then to award him the breed.
He is as wonderful in full maturity as he was then, and I would be very proud to have bred and owned him.
As for Be’rin, my Best of Breed, her selection was a reminder of the pleasure and alchemy involved in the judging process.
One is faced with a ring full of worthy and attractive specimens; where to start?
One has to be critical, and seek out the finer points on which decisions will be made – who will make the cut? – but little by little the clouds start to clear, and the gems sparkle.
And oh! How pleasing to find such a sound, typical, fit, strong and beautifully constructed hound
to remember as the best of a wonderful day.

CONGRATULATIONS  TO ALL THE WINNERS!

Magnificent. I love this boy. He is big and beautiful, certainly ‘of great size and commanding appearance’.

but embodies so much of what makes a big male steal my heart.

What a way to start the classes! Outstanding six months old. He has an excellent balance to his head, with good planes, well set ears and overall proportions. Head carried with strength through neck into well laid shoulders and super front. Good layback of upper arm, angulations beautifully balanced, long second thigh and gentle flowing topline. Moved with a freedom his construction would suggest. Yet to develop a harsh coat but, nevertheless, the best six months old I have ever had the pleasure to judge. Compared to the winners, this young lad was less well angulated and narrower all through. His front assembly was too columnar,

Similar make to winner, but with less balance to his angulations, being more extreme in rear and more upright in front.
He is a handsome lad, with nicely made head on a strong neck. Shoulder placement less smooth than winner,
giving the impression that his topline falls away. I noted that he wasn’t articulating his hocks so freely,
so although he was extending well at the trot, he lost an element of powerful driving from the rear.

Picture
LONNKYLE PROVENANCE
Simmons’ Lonnkyle Provenance
Well-presented strong dark bitch with gentle expression, lovely head, good well put together front, balanced angulations and
proportions all through. Good top and underline, and she demonstrated strong, easy and active movement. Reserve winners bitch.

BRED BY EXHIBITOR BITCH 2nd thru 4th

Picture
2nd - PINEHURST EVITA OF TARYN
Catov-Goodell & Fairbanks’ Pinehurst Evita of Taryn
Another strong girl with lovely head sporting well set and carried ears, and set on a strong neck and smooth shoulder.
Nicely balanced angulations without exaggeration, but just that bit weaker in hindquarters and with weaker hocks than the winner.
This was reflected in her movement, which was strong and steady, but a touch close behind.

3rd - TALIESIN'S BRICE SC
Smiths’ Taliesin’s  Brice
Blockier and more compact type; a very good and sound specimen put together smoothly but just lacks the hindquarters to drive
as smoothly as I would wish. My notes say ‘square girl’ but this is unfair for such a high quality hound!

4th - DRY CREEK PASTICHE
Knight’s Dry Creek Pastiche
A lovely shapely hound with proud but kind expression who didn’t have the strength in front that her competition in this class possessed.
Although not just as smooth through the shoulders, she has a good topline. She moved well with great enthusiasm!

NOVICE BITCH

Picture
ROCKHART MAFIA
Simon’s Rockhart Mafia
Similar stamp and quality to the winner, but her movement was chaotic! A lovely hound standing, with great proportions,
although I would prefer a little more rise over loin. She has a good typical head and alert expression, and is altogether nicely made.

NOVICE BITCH 2nd

Picture
2nd -  ROCKHART MAWINGO
Simon’s Rockhart Mawingo
Very similar remarks to the second in the class. My notes say ‘look related’, and so they are.
She has a good strong well carried head and overall correct proportions and balance, and moved with vigour.

Picture
ROCKHART KENYA

A dark bitch with lovely outline. She has an alert expression and beautifully high set and carried ears.
Nice strong neck into well laid shoulders, good topline and well-matched underline. When she moved, she showed composure

AMERICAN BRED BITCH 2nd thru 4th PLACE

Picture
2nd - CARAGLEN BERWYCK PROMISE KEPT
Berry, Bernardi & Stobart’s Caraglen Berwyck Promise Kept
Rangier hound than the winner. Appears less balanced, a touch longer in loin, and prone to drooping in the heat today which spoiled her stacked outline, and her feet could be tighter. However, she brought herself together very well and came into her own on the move.
Proud head carriage and smooth through shoulders. Pleasing to watch her gaiting.

3rd - ROCKHART MALICE
Simon’s Rockhart Malice
Inclined to lean and pull when moving which spoilt the chances for this fine bitch. She is well made with good balanced
unexaggerated angulations. Nice head and well set neck. My notes say ‘Old fashioned look’ which I say is a good thing!

4th - CUALAINN WILD AMBITION

A more compact but nevertheless attractive girl, definitely ‘cobby’ compared with the winners,
but balanced, very well made and moved with freedom.

OPEN BITCH

Picture
BOONDOCKS ALGEBRA OF CUSHLA MCCREE
Pitzenberger’s Boondocks Algebra of Cushla McCree
Very sound, strong four-and-a-half-year-old bitch in her prime. She has a gentle expression, with dark, kind eyes, a powerful neck,
good front, lovely top- and underline, balanced angulation with powerful hindquarters and a long tail.
Moved well in a manner which was reflective of her super construction. Winners Bitch.

balance to her angulations and strong throughout, with easy active movement.

4th - NIGHTWINGS MERCY
Simon’s Nightwings Mercy
Not quite the front of the third, but strong and very well made. Good head and expression, with super set of ears; my notes say ‘Snake head’ which if you know your greyhound references, is no bad thing! Just a touch long for her height. Good strong hound.
