I had a lovely weekend at Northstar Specialty! Meeting so many wonderful people, dear old friends and making new ones. From being picked up at the airport 'til I, and my travel friends, were dropped off at the same, we were taken care of in the best way. The arrangements were great, the show ground perfect and I was privileged to go over your hounds and make my opinion.
This was the first time I entered an AKC show, rules and guidelines are different from FCI. So, reading up and preparing is not the same as to deal with it in real life. I was lucky to have the best Steward, Jamie, who patiently kept me on track.
The entry was mixed, as it used to be. Bitches better than the males, no surprise either. My puppy class of young girls was a delight! So many hopes for the future.
Top placed hounds were all excellent Irish Wolfhounds. My Best of Breed was the eye catcher of the day, and the one I want by my side when I meet the wolf! My Best of Opposite was a classy, all harmony and dignity. A perfect picture of a mature Irish Wolfhound bitch.
I had the chance to check the mouths, all was ok, most of them excellent. All broad enought with canines in right place. But, please, clean your dogs teeth, or give them knuckle bones! An easy way to avoid further problems.
I was amazed to see all typical heads, no too light eyes but several really dark ones. Most of the hound had high set and folded ears, small and thin enough. Far more correct heads with details than I am used to see at home. This is so much a ”head-breed”, type in head is important.
A handful of the hound had excellent front construction, length, angle and balance of upper arm/shoulder with filled fore chest. Most of them were ok. Some rear ends needed more muscles. This is also a genetic matter. Some seems to be born with muscle tone, some hardly develop it despite hard exercise.
Most briskets were long and broad enough. It is important to keep The Irish Wolfhound ”workmanlike”, and never create him into a ”Showdog”. Seeing your hounds, I am satisfied with that matter!
Thank you all so much for inviting me to judge your hounds, your sportsmanship and over all kind atmosphere. I know what it takes to arrange a show, and this was superb. You are all amazing in your co work.
Last, but most important: Thank you all for coming! I am truly honored. All hounds had something I liked, ribbon or not. I am looking forward to seeing you again!
