       Judge: Mrs Deborah Tebbutt
I am writing this commentary in our 5hour stopover in JFK. I really did not want too much time between my judging and these “judge’s comments”. Usually, of course, these are made at the end of the show but, after two days of roaring heat I can fully understand that people wanted to be on the road… or at least finding some rest and cool - not listening to us!
First of all, thank you so much for inviting us. What a pleasure it was, lovely friendly, accepting people and a warm welcome in stunning Minnesota. Marilyn McClaskey was our saintly chauffeuse who answered our every whim. She was lovely.
50 years ago Roger turned up with his wolfhound puppy at my university halls of residence and I fell in love with them both. Neither of us could ever have dreamed that we would be invited to Minnesota all those years on to judge, as we did this weekend, in tandem! We share our passion for the breed and the hounds we have at home but the question was…what do we really have in common in terms of our interpretation of that standard?
From the outset we had decided that discretion was vital. I did not take either catalogue or judging book from the show and would not share any opinions with him after day one. As I arrived back at the hotel on Saturday to a cool shower and a glass of wine, poor Roger started to ask “so what did you think in general of the quality?” Before I could mumble anything he said” No I don’t even want to know that!” So we did our own thing. It’s important in this situation when people travel long distances to get an opinion that it’s straight and honest.
I appreciate that. Thank you all for coming.
In the end our BIS and BOS were the same. I don’t think either of us expected that but took great pleasure in the exceptional quality of both. Our male classes appear to have been eerily matched too. Looking back, there I was at the show, the judge, doubtless full of myself, taking centre stage, opinionated, full of confidence. I knew it all. Add to that, here I was coming from the UK, the home of the breed, so these Americans can’t possibly be as good at breeding or knowing a good hound, can they? They can’t argue can they?
We’ll, let me tell you, I have been the one to learn from coming to this show. Having judged in many countries, the quality of the entry is the best I have ever seen. You know what you are trying to do and the rest of the world needs to come and have a look!  My general responses are what fabulously proportioned heads there were generally. The true type was there and there were many fit, muscular and free moving hounds, some exceptional long gaits.
The entry displayed such fitness - look at that veteran bitch class as an exemplar! There were some great coats, some in various degrees of repair but mostly short, harsh and glowing.
In some classes especially bitches…it would have been possible to just toss a coin for placings. Wow!
If I were allowed to get pompous and full of my own opinion, I would advise keeping an eye on selecting away from upright patterns, tails carried high, longer loins with flatter top lines and the odd shorter legs. But hey, come to the UK and grieve. There are outstanding hounds there, yes, but few. The breed there as a whole lacks type and sadly, depth and numbers. Forget about the head proportions and soulful expressions! Most are long gone.  I leave Minnesota feeling that if judges are breeders they need to be ambassadors in the breed.
I will take things home to my kennel otherwise I am just a jumped- up bombast dishing out opinion who adds nothing to Irish wolfhounds.
Thank you, for inspiring me at least!
I must thank Andrea Dormady and Jamie Germain, my stewards for, not only keeping me – and the exhibitors-in order but for their patience and wit. What an asset they are!

Debbie Tebbutt
This critique is just a snapshot of what I saw and please bear in mind that any slightly negative comments are meant to distinguish my placings.
I repeat this was a sensational group of wolfhounds.

CH TALIESIN'S BE'RIN
Smiths’ Ch Taliesin’s Be’rin
A simply gorgeous bitch, all of a piece and in fabulous condition. She has commanding appearance but yet is graceful in build. I was captivated by her finely proportioned head with the darkest pigmentation and an eye colour to match and beautifully carried ears. Her neck is well arched and muscular and the upper arm so well laid back that she presents a series of curves in front, rear, topline and underline. I loved the set of her croup, those wide upper thighs and her strength in bone. Majestic on the move, her outline never faltered, head carried high as she just stole the show from the equally fabulous BOS male.

Here’s a stallion male with all the curves and grace of a sighthound which marked him out from the quality crowd. Such great size and commanding appearance cannot be argued with and I loved that head.   He has a wonderful front, powerful hind quarters, well bent stifles and tremendous bone with great feet pads. Easy and active on the move which was not easy for such a big boy in the heat, I loved his proud head carriage and the majestic profile he showed on the move. Another in top condition.

Attractive bitch whose all of a piece with an elegant head, neat ears, a lovely topline, well crested neck and a lovely shape to topline leading into a good shoulder. She has a lovely sweep to hindquarters with well bent stifles and good feet. A bit edgy to start, she settled eventually into a good easy gait, head held high. I loved her type, the width to her upper thigh and gently rising topline. Reserve Winners Bitch
