Carrickaneena Irish Wolfhounds

My family has been involved with the Irish Wolfhound for generations. Both my maternal Grandfather and his Uncle had and raised Wolfhounds in Ireland, so I can honestly say the breed is ingrained in my genetics! Our kennel name in fact comes from the name of my Grandfather’s farm in Ireland “Carrickaneena” which means “Little Rock”. Our foundation hounds came from Miss Sheelagh Seale of Ballykelly Irish Wolfhounds in Ireland. At the time, we were living in Ireland, and many an enjoyable day was spent roaming the fields with Ballykelly Errislannan Liam, and his favored bitch Fiona. I learned much from Miss Seale who dedicated her life to this magnificent breed. I am honored to have been mentored by many longtime breeders through the years, such as the late Anthony Killykeen Doyle of Killykeen Irish Wolfhounds, And John Kelly of Nutstown Irish Wolfhounds. I have been showing Irish Wolfhounds since I was able to reach over the top of them in order to be able to stack them myself. Finally, in 1977 the first Wolfhound of my own arrived from Sheelagh in Ireland. Brigid and I were inseparable, and she taught me many valuable lessons! It is from this bitch that I learned sportsmanship and teamwork; lessons I have never forgotten. Together with my Mother, Eileen M. Flanagan, Carrickaneena has produced multiple Best in Specialty Winners, and over 100 American Champions and Grand Champions, including many Dual Champions and others who excelled in Field trials. I am also an AKC Lure Coursing Judge, and I delight in watching a well-constructed hound run as they were born to do. It is from coursing and watching Wolfhounds and other Sighthounds run that I have come to appreciate the nuances of our standard, and their importance in maintaining the functionality of our breed. A balanced, well moving Irish Wolfhound is a joy to behold! My past Specialty judging assignments include the Irish Wolfhound Club of the Czech Republic in 2018, Irish Wolfhound Association of the West Coast Specialty in 2017, Sweepstakes at the Irish Wolfhound Club of Canada - Mid Canada Branch Specialty in 2009, and Sweepstakes at The Irish Wolfhound Club of America’s National Specialty in 2010.

The Judge's critiques... I would like to thank the Officers and Show Committee of the NorthStar Irish Wolfhound Club for the honor of judging your specialty.  It was my first time in Minnesota, and I enjoyed myself immensely.  I wish I could have stayed longer.
My Steward Mr. Edward Germaine was, as always, a force of nature!  I was so happy to have his capable presence in my ring.  An experienced, professional Steward is priceless.  Thank you, Jamie, for making my job so much easier!
My hostess Dee Moss was so welcoming!  It was so kind of her to open her lovely home during this time of COVID uncertainty.  Thank you especially, Dee, for making sure I got my morning dose of Caffeine each day.  Your club was a joy to experience!  Everyone was happy and accepted my placements with grace.  Thank you for your hospitality and the warm enjoyable gathering after the show.

The hounds on the whole, were quite impressive with correct breed type.  Heads and expressions were very good, with the majority having a good dark eye. Most had nice, rosed ears, but a few had larger ears which tend to hang flat to the head.   Movement, for the most part was excellent, due in no small part to good conditioning.   Only a few were wanting in muscle.  Length of leg was good, and very few were lacking in substance and bone.

The same faults were present that plague us all around the world… namely a few short upper arms and upright scapulas, as well as a few narrow lower jaws (though fewer than in the past).  These faults are insidious and need to be watched.  There were a few hounds, however, who need to lose some weight.  Thankfully, they were all well-muscled enough that it had not caused them to break down, but gravity is relentless, and it is only a matter of time.

In the end, I was thrilled with my top placements… especially my Best Puppy.  I will be watching him mature with great interest!  Finally, I would like to thank all the exhibitors for your great sportsmanship and allowing me the privilege to assess your hounds.

BEST OF BREED/BEST OF WINNERS
Picture
ROCKHART  KENYA
Best of Breed & Best of Winners
In the end, my Winners Bitch just got better and better the more she went. In the breed ring she had a new handler and a new attitude!  She was effortless on the move and moved with strength and determination.  On this day she was not to be denied!

Rockhart Kenya
- This bitch was a series of flowing curves from the top of her head to the bottom of her feet. A lovely feminine head with dark eyes and small rosed ears set on a strong neck that laid smoothly into her well laid-back shoulder and well set under front. Her top line was strong and never changed standing or moving. Her rear was well muscled with well let down hocks. Once she made up her mind to go, she moved with strength and grace.

NIGHTWINGS HEADHUNTER
My Winners Dog was my choice for Best of Opposite Sex.  He held himself well despite the heat.
Nightwing’s Headhunter - A handsome dark dog with a beautiful front. His elbows are well set under with good return of upper arm. His head is very pleasing with a strong lower jaw and a nice small ear. He has a strong silhouette, and beautiful top line which held true on the move. He used himself quite well, pushing strongly with good reach and drive.  He is one of those hounds who always looks better standing naturally, as he tended to fight his handler on the stack.   Winners Dog, Best Bred by Exhibitor

CH ROCKHART RAPHAEL
Rockhart Raphael – This is a big Stallion of a hound!  He embodied “Great size and Commanding Appearance”.  His head is strong with a broad underjaw.  His neck is powerful and flows smoothly into a well set and laid-back shoulder.  His topline is strong with sufficient rise over the loin.  He is nicely muscled and has a strong thigh and second thigh with a good sweep to the stifle.  He moved very soundly despite carrying too much weight.  I would love to see him again when he slims down!

4TH -ROCKHART YESTERDAY'S RAVENSARA OF TRESMORN
Rockhart Yesterday’s Ravensara of Tresmorn
 - nicely balanced bitch. A little more moderate than the first two but well-balanced front and rear. Her upper arm is a bit short, causing her front to sit further forward. Her rear is nicely angled with good short hocks. Topline is strong with well arched loin. Nice crisp coat. Moved well.
